What Was BTS's Day-to-Day Life Like in the Korean Military?

For years, BTS fans watched the members perform on the world's biggest stages, travel from country to country, record music, and live a life that seemed almost impossible to imagine.

Then came something completely different.

Beginning with Jin's enlistment in December 2022, all seven members of BTS eventually stepped away from their careers to fulfill South Korea's mandatory military service requirements. By June 2025, every member had completed his service. Six members served in the military, while Suga fulfilled his obligation through South Korea's alternative social-service system.

For ARMY, the years apart raised an obvious question:

What were BTS actually doing every day while they were in the military?

The answer is surprisingly ordinary.

Instead of recording albums, performing concerts, and traveling the world, BTS members spent their days following military schedules, attending training, maintaining their living areas, eating meals with fellow soldiers, exercising, completing assigned duties, and adapting to a completely different lifestyle.

While the exact schedules varied depending on the member, unit, assignment, and stage of service, their military lives followed the structure of ordinary South Korean military service.

Here's what a typical day could look like.

The Day Starts Early

One of the biggest changes from BTS' normal lifestyle was the schedule.

Military life begins early.

Accounts of South Korean military life commonly describe soldiers waking around 6:30 a.m., followed by morning activities, training, work, or other assigned duties. One recent account of military barracks life described the day beginning at 6:30 a.m., with scheduled duties and education continuing through the afternoon.

For BTS, this meant trading late nights in recording studios and hotel rooms for early mornings governed by military routine.

In fact, V later revealed that the routine stayed with him even after he left the military.

During BTS' reunion livestream following their military service, V said he still found himself waking up around 6:30 a.m. and instinctively performing a military-style roll call.

Imagine being one of the biggest stars on the planet and still waking up at the same time every morning because your body has become accustomed to military life.

Breakfast and Morning Formation

After waking up, soldiers typically prepare themselves for the day before moving into their scheduled morning activities.

That can include roll call, physical exercise, inspections, breakfast, and preparation for the day's assignments.

Military service is highly structured, meaning soldiers generally don't decide what they want to do each morning.

The schedule is determined by the unit.

For someone accustomed to BTS' extremely flexible celebrity lifestyle, this would have been a major adjustment.

There were no spontaneous decisions to spend the morning recording a song.

No deciding to sleep until noon after a concert.

No jumping on a plane for an overseas schedule.

Instead, the day followed the military's timetable.

Training Was a Major Part of the Experience

For new recruits, the first weeks were particularly demanding.

South Korean active-duty soldiers begin their service with basic military training. This includes learning military discipline and basic combat skills before moving on to their assigned units.

Training can include activities such as physical conditioning, marching, weapons training, combat exercises, chemical-defense training, and other military instruction.

BTS members were not exempt from the basic realities of this process.

Jin, RM, V, Jimin, Jung Kook, and J-Hope all went through military training as active-duty personnel.

Jimin and Jung Kook enlisted together and completed their initial training at the Army's 5th Infantry Division Recruit Training Center. Jimin was recognized as an outstanding trainee and received a commendation during his training.

For the members, the training period meant learning how to function as soldiers rather than performers.

Then Came the Workday

After basic training, military life became more dependent on each member's assignment.

This is where there is an important misconception about BTS' military service.

There wasn't one single "BTS military schedule."

Each member eventually had different responsibilities.

RM, for example, served in the Army's 15th Infantry Division military band.

V was assigned to the military police's Special Task Force after completing his extended training.

Jin eventually became a drill instructor, helping train newer recruits.

J-Hope also became involved in training and was recognized for his role within the military.

The assignments meant that their days could look very different from one another.

One member might be involved with training.

Another might have administrative responsibilities.

Another could be working with a military band.

Another could be involved in security or military-police duties.

They were no longer operating as seven members of BTS.

They were soldiers with individual responsibilities.

Lunch Was a Break in the Day

Like other soldiers, BTS members had scheduled meals.

A typical military day includes designated meal periods rather than the freedom to eat whenever you want.

One firsthand account of South Korean military life described a schedule running from approximately 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with a substantial lunch break in the middle of the day.

For BTS, meals would have been another part of adjusting to life alongside other soldiers rather than living according to celebrity schedules.

And while fans may imagine the members constantly talking about music, military life naturally gave them plenty of other things to focus on.

Afternoon Training and Assigned Duties

After lunch, the workday continued.

Depending on the unit and assignment, soldiers could spend the afternoon training, completing assigned work, attending educational sessions, maintaining facilities, or carrying out other duties.

Recent reporting on South Korean military life describes drills and educational programs continuing through the afternoon.

This is one of the biggest differences between BTS' military life and their career as musicians.

During a normal BTS schedule, the members might spend an entire day moving between rehearsals, photo shoots, interviews, recording sessions, and performances.

In the military, their priorities were determined by their assignments.

The job came first.

Cleaning Was Part of Daily Life

Military service isn't just about combat training.

There are also plenty of ordinary responsibilities.

Soldiers are expected to maintain their living spaces and equipment.

Cleaning, organizing belongings, maintaining uniforms, and keeping shared spaces in order are all part of military life.

A firsthand account from a South Korean military trainee described activities ranging from cleaning floors to maintaining uniforms and other everyday tasks.

For someone like BTS, who normally has an enormous team working behind the scenes, this would have been another major change.

Military service stripped away much of the convenience that comes with being a global superstar.

Finally, Some Free Time

Once the day's major duties were finished, soldiers could have personal time depending on their unit's schedule and regulations.

One firsthand account described free time continuing into the evening, followed by room cleaning before a 10 p.m. curfew.

This was likely one of the moments when the members could finally relax.

They could talk with fellow soldiers.

They could exercise.

They could write.

They could contact people outside the military when permitted.

And, of course, they could think about life beyond the military.

For BTS, that eventually meant thinking about the future of the group.

What About Their Music?

BTS didn't simply stop being musicians when they enlisted.

Several members continued developing their individual careers before or during their service, and the group had already released solo projects during their period apart.

But military service significantly changed how often they could work together.

For years, BTS had been accustomed to creating music as a group.

Suddenly, the seven members were spread across different assignments and locations.

That separation lasted until the final members completed their service in June 2025.

When RM and V were discharged on June 10, followed by Jimin and Jung Kook on June 11 and Suga on June 18, the entire group had finally completed its military obligations.

Suga Had a Different Experience

Suga's military experience was different from the other six members.

Because of his medical classification following a previous shoulder injury and surgery, he fulfilled his obligation through South Korea's alternative service system rather than serving as an active-duty soldier.

He began his alternative service in September 2023 and served as a social service agent.

This meant his daily routine was different from the active-duty military schedules followed by Jin, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook.

His service still fulfilled South Korea's mandatory military requirement, but his work took place through the country's alternative service system.

They Were Still BTS, But They Were Also Soldiers

Perhaps the most interesting part of BTS' military experience is how ordinary much of it was.

These were members of one of the biggest music groups in the world.

But inside the military, they still had to wake up early.

They still had to follow orders.

They still had to train.

They still had to clean.

They still had to eat according to the schedule.

They still had to complete their assigned responsibilities.

Their celebrity status didn't eliminate the basic structure of military life.

In many ways, that was the entire point.

For a period of time, BTS had to step away from being BTS.

What Did They Take Away From the Experience?

The members have spoken about how military service changed them.

After completing their service, BTS reunited and eventually began preparing for their next chapter together.

In a 2026 GQ profile, the members described the period after military service as a time of rebuilding their group dynamic and returning to music. The seven members even lived together in Los Angeles while working on their next album, creating a completely different environment from the years they had spent apart.

The contrast is remarkable.

Before military service:

Seven members.
Constant schedules.
World tours.
Recording sessions.
Award shows.
Millions of fans.

During military service:

Early mornings.
Uniforms.
Training.
Assigned duties.
Barracks.
Military discipline.

After military service:

Seven members together again.
A new album.
New music.
And a new chapter for BTS.

BTS' Military Chapter Is Finally Over

The military period was one of the biggest interruptions in BTS' career.

But it was also an experience that every member had to face individually.

Jin was the first to go in.

J-Hope followed.

Suga completed alternative service.

Then RM, V, Jimin, and Jung Kook enlisted in December 2023.

By June 2025, all seven were officially finished.

The members had spent years apart, lived under military discipline, taken on completely different responsibilities, and experienced a part of South Korean life that was very different from the world of K-pop.

And perhaps the most surprising part is that some of those habits followed them home.

V still woke up at 6:30.

The members still joked about their military experiences.

And eventually, they were back together doing what they had always done best:

making music as BTS.

For ARMY, the military chapter may now be history.

But it became one of the most important chapters in BTS' story.
